About 70 asylum seekers will temporarily live in the administrative center of Sint-Oedenrode. The municipality of Meierijstad announced this on Wednesday. The intention is for them to come from Ter Apel in a week and a half because there is no room there. The shelter in the administrative center will last approximately three months.
To quickly create space, the municipality is setting up a so-called Crisis Emergency Shelter (CNO) at Burgemeester Wernerplein. This concerns short-term shelter in areas that the government usually uses in the event of a disaster or crisis.
Mayor Kees van Rooij is the one who determines the course of events. In the event of an emergency, he is responsible for safety in his municipality. With a CNO, any objections from local residents are not taken into account. Residents going to court, as recently happened at the asylum reception center in a hotel in Uden, is therefore not an option.
Local council
In the administrative center, the new residents will sit almost side by side with the council members who regularly meet there. To ensure that temporary housing runs smoothly, experienced workers are deployed who are already active in other reception locations of the municipality.
Meierijstad is currently already receiving 200 asylum seekers. This takes place at two locations in Schijndel and at chalet park Boschvoort in Sint-Oedenrode. 80 underage asylum seekers are housed at the latter location. Including the newcomers in the administrative center, the total number of reception places in the municipality rises to 360.
