3. high profile transfer
According to current information, Aston Villa has a new most valuable player in the squad for next season: On Thursday evening, the club from Birmingham announced an agreement with FC Sevilla on the transfer of central defender Diego Carlos. The 29-year-old Brazilian will travel to England in the coming days to complete the medical check and sign a contract, the Villans said.
Carlos, who won the Olympics with Brazil last year, is currently valued at 45 million euros. There was initially no reliable information about the amount of the fee – the release clause of the defender in Seville is said to have been between 75 million and 80 million euros. But the total is likely to be lower. Newcastle United are said to have offered around €36m in January when the Andalusians turned it down. The most expensive Villa professional to date was Emiliano Buendía (25) last summer, for whom 38.4 million euros flowed to Norwich.
Carlos moved from FC Nantes to Seville in 2019 for 15 million euros, where he has played 136 competitive games since then and celebrated success in the Europa League in his first season. For Aston Villa, he is already the third top-class transfer of the coming season: Philippe Coutinho (29) was signed by FC Barcelona for 20 million euros and Boubacar Kamara (22) comes from Marseille on a free transfer after his contract expires.
