Tuchel not interested
Aston Villa are looking for a new coach after the sacking of coach Steven Gerrard and a fall to 17th place in the table. As “The Athletic” and the “Telegraph” report unanimously that those responsible for the Premier League club are talking to Rúben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon, among others. Apparently, the 37-year-old Portuguese was not the preferred solution at first.
Aston Villa reportedly knocked on the door of Mauricio Pochettino before Gerrard’s exit, but the Argentinian, who is said to be speculating on a more lucrative task, turned down the deal. A renewed effort after the separation with the submission of a large offer (according to “Telegraph”) was unsuccessful. Thomas Tuchel, who was recently released from Chelsea surprisingly, could not imagine the position at the “Villans” either. In addition, Unai Emery was traded, but the Spaniard is happy at Villarreal. That is why Amorim is now the focus.
The ex-professional is considered one of the most talented coaches in Europe and has attracted attention in Portugal. His release clause is said to be 30 million euros. Amorim’s contract in Lisbon, where the last few weeks have been anything but smooth, is dated until June 2024. Marcel de Almeida, Area Manager Portugal at Transfermarkt, believes that under normal circumstances Amorim will stay at Sporting at least until the summer and that in future he will be drawn not to Aston Villa but to a bigger club.
TM assessment: Sporting’s Amorim unlikely to join Aston Villa
“For the first time at Sporting, he is currently having something like a small crisis, the season is not going as expected. Amorim isn’t as confident as it was last season either,” said de Almeida. “If Amorim were willing to accept an offer from Aston Villa, I imagine Sporting would also sell him for less. But not for less than 20 million euros and only if the club already has another coach up its sleeve.” He considers the likelihood of a move from Amorim to Aston Villa to be low.

The sacked Gerrard had taken over the side from Dean Smith around 11 months ago when Villa were 16th. Since then he has averaged 1.18 points from 40 games and finished 14th last season. With just seven goals scored, Aston Villa share the second-lowest goal tally in the league, along with bottom-placed Nottingham and Wolverhampton. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will be on the touchline on an interim basis against Brentford at the weekend.
