Aston Martin, the updates that make Alonso fly

Let’s see in detail the development package that allowed the AMR23 to regain competitiveness in the last Dutch GP after the hitches before the summer break

The second place conquered by Fernando Alonso in the Netherlands has revitalized the second force aspirations of the World CupAston Martinwho had finished the first part of the season in third place in the standings, after having been second for a long time in the first eight races in which she had obtained six podiums, always with the Spaniard.

similar to red bull

In the last four races, before the summer break, from the Austrian GP to Belgium, the team of Lawrence Stroll was no longer able to capitalize on the basic characteristics of theAMR23which incorporates in a reasoned and effective way many principles that characterize the project of Red Bull RB19. This is not surprising for at least two reasons, on the one hand the presence for over a year and a half of Dan Fallowstechnical director, previously head of aerodynamics for the Milton Keynes team, therefore aware of the basic principles of last year’s RB18, at least in terms of design philosophy, but also because the team had already developed the concept of the AMR22 in 2022 following an autonomous path, marrying that of the sloping sides.

the new changes

In Holland, the AMR23 was the car that introduced the largest package of modifications, both tied to one new version of front wing characterized by a flap with a profile and above all by the revised rope, increased, specifically for the characteristics of the Dutch track. But what undoubtedly improved the performance of this single-seater was the evolution to which the rear diffuser has undergone. This is a modification that is not easily visible, as it concerned the section of the Venturi channels at the height of the diffuser elbow. It was possible to identify the modification thanks to the adoption in the first free practice session of a network of sensors, positioned exactly in the point where the intervention had been carried out, thus making clear the verification by the engineers of the Silverstone team, of the its effectiveness, in terms of speed and pressure of the underlying flow.

center of pressure

The new fund, seems to have allowed greater stability of the aerodynamic pressure center of the car, but above all, it has increased the load generated underneath. It will be interesting to evaluate this weekend at Monza, on a track which on paper does not seem to be ideal for the characteristics of the AMR23, whether the development introduced at Zandvoort is able to make this car less track sensitive, i.e. sensitive to the characteristics of the individual tracks. On the other hand, there is no doubt that on tracks such as Singapore, Losail, Austin, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, the AMR23 should be able to deliver the best performances.
