Assen starts trial with luminous shark teeth

The municipality of Assen is starting a trial to make bicycle and pedestrian crossings safer. This starts with luminous shark teeth at Assen station. The shark teeth light up when a cyclist or pedestrian passes, making it easier for the motorist to see when he needs to stop.

BAM Infra, which is carrying out the project, will assess in the coming weeks whether everything is working properly. It is especially important that the system properly recognizes pedestrians, cyclists and cars.

The LED-OP technology, as it is called, lets motorists know that pedestrians or cyclists are crossing by lighting up shark teeth. The municipality expects that the technology will make crossing safer and prevent accidents in the future.

After testing, BAM and the municipality of Assen expect to officially open the LED-OP system at Stationsplein. Cyclists and pedestrians will receive a nice present that day.
