Assen gets survival job in Kloosterveen

Running, climbing and clambering over obstacles: it’s possible in Assen after the summer. The city will have a survival run track in the Kloosterveen district. Sports club Stark Survivalrun Assen is building a track there to provide training.

It concerns a piece of land next to Playground Kloosterveen, along the Asserwijk and the Johannes Kroezepad. There are various obstacles on the field, such as beams, nets and ropes.

“A beautiful place”, says Ronald Struik, chairman of Stark. Together with co-founder Gerrit Meijering, he devised the plan to build his own track. “During the corona period, we ran together throughout Drenthe. We then wondered why there is no place for this sport in Assen yet,” says Struik. There are survival courses in Westerbork, Norg and Sleen, among others.

The two survival enthusiasts first had their eye on a place at the Baggelhuizerplas, but that fell through. In consultation with the municipality, they found another suitable location in the Asser district of Kloosterveen. “An ideal place, because we both live in that neighbourhood,” says Struik.

Struik discovered the love for survival run seven years ago. And he is not the only one, because according to him the sport is very popular. “Many locations in the North are desperately looking for volunteers and a number of associations in Drenthe even have a membership stop,” says Struik.

The permit application is currently with the municipality. If all goes well, construction will start after the summer holidays. The club hopes to start in October.
