The vast majority of West Flemish cities and municipalities bear the costs of eliminating such nests. Middelkerke is an exception. Jean-Marie Dedecker did issue a mayoral decree. This obliges the owners to destroy the nest within 48 hours. The municipality will check on Monday whether this has been complied with. Otherwise, Mayor Dedecker will have the tree cut down at the owner’s expense.

“Time Bomb”

Neighbors with children are worried. A sting from an Asian hornet can be very dangerous. “That is a time bomb hanging over our heads,” says father Christophe Provoost. “If that falls down, we cannot foresee the consequences when the children play in the garden.” Pieces of the nest came down earlier.
