The Asian Games in the Chinese city of Hangzhou will continue this year, despite a new wave of corona infections in fairly nearby Shanghai. That is what the Olympic council of Malaysia claims.
There would be a postponement of the four-yearly event, which is scheduled for September. The Olympic Council of Asia previously told the French news agency AFP that that possibility still exists, but chairman Norza Zakaria of the Olympic Council of Malaysia stated firmly that the Games will continue.
Most international sporting events in China have been suspended since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, except for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. These took place in February in a strict ‘biobubble’. Shortly after the Games, the metropolis of Shanghai had to deal with one of the worst outbreaks of Covid-19 in two years. The many millions of residents have been in lockdown since the beginning of April.
