Asia Cup: South Korea turns game against Australia and follows Jordan into the semi-finals

South Korea came from behind to beat Australia in extra time in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup. Jordan prevailed against Tajikistan.

With a 2-1 (1-1, 0-1) after extra time against Australia, South Korea reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup, which is taking place in Qatar. Coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s team will now face Jordan in the semi-finals, having previously beaten Tajikistan 1-0 (0-0). Then national coach Klinsmann has to do without defender Min-Jae Kim from FC Bayern Munich due to a yellow card suspension.

South Korea equalized in stoppage time

Craig Goodwin initially gave Australia the lead (42nd minute). South Korea was already running out of time in the second half before Hee-Chan Hwang equalized with a penalty kick in stoppage time (90+6). Heung-Min Son decided the game in extra time: he hit the left corner from a free kick (104′). Australia’s Aiden O’Neill was shown a red card for serious foul play (105.+4).

Jordan wins with an own goal against Tajikistan

In the duel between the two surprise teams, Jordan narrowly beat Tajikistan 1-0. Wahdat Hanonov’s own goal from a corner in the 66th minute was the only goal of the game.

A strong tournament ends for Tajikistan, with their first participation ending in reaching the quarter-finals. For Jordan it is the first time they have reached a semi-final of the Asian Cup.

Two more games in the quarterfinals on Saturday

The other two games in the quarter-finals are on Saturday. Iran will then face Japan (12.30 p.m.), hosts Qatar will play against Uzbekistan (4.30 p.m.).
