Melbourne (AP) – The world number one Ashleigh Barty kept her chance at the title at the Australian Open. The Australian tennis player ended the winning streak of American Amanda Anisimova in Melbourne with a score of 6:4, 6:3 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
In Melbourne, Barty carries hopes of becoming the first Australian tennis player since Chris O’Neil in 1978 to win the Australian Open. In the round of the top eight of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the 25-year-old now meets Jessica Pegula from the USA.
The world rankings-21. Pegula defeated fifth-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 and made it into the top eight at the Australian Open for the second time since 2021.
In another quarter-final, Barbora Krejcikova and Madison Keys will play for a place in the semi-finals. Czech French Open winner Krejcikova advanced 6-2, 6-2 against two-time Australian Open winner Victoria Asarenka of Belarus. Former US Open finalist Keys dominated 6-3, 6-1 against Spanish top ten player Paula Badosa. All three German women – Angelique Kerber, Andrea Petkovic and Tatjana Maria – were eliminated in the first round.
