AS Monaco: Talent Eliesse Ben Seghir scores twice in Ligue 1 debut

With an important victory in Auxerre

AS Monaco stayed within Ligue 1 of the Champions League thanks to a 3-2 win at AJ Auxerre on Wednesday night. The club from the Principality, where Alexander Nübel was in goal, is in fifth place with 20 points from 16 games and reduced the gap to third place to one point. The evening’s story was written by 17-year-old Eliesse Ben Seghir.

At half-time, the attacking midfielder was brought on by coach Philippe Clement for Wissam Ben Yedder and, following a brief stint in the Europa League at the beginning of November, has now made his debut in the French league. This couldn’t have gone better. In the 58th minute, Aleksandr Golovin served the right foot, who kept his nerve from the inside left in front of the goal and scored the lead – as the fifth youngest goalscorer in the club’s history, that was historic.

27 minutes later, Ben Seghir celebrated again. After the hosts equalised, the 17-year-old restored the lead with a remarkable long-range shot. Only 28 players have scored two goals on their debut in Ligue 1, none of them as young as Monaco’s home-grown talent.

“It’s no surprise to us,” Clement said after the game (quoted via “L’Equipe”). “He showed things in this match that we’ve seen lately. The club are lucky to have these kind of players. For me there is no difference between a player of that age and an older one. If he proves himself, he plays. You have to give him the chance when he deserves it. I’m happy with what he showed today. Eliesse has great potential. We see his progress every day.”
