contract would have expired
A free transfer in the coming summer of Douglas Luiz, who has been heavily courted by Arsenal FC in recent months, is off the table. The 24-year-old defensive midfielder has extended his expiring contract with Aston Villa, the club from Birmingham announced on Friday, without mentioning the term. According to Fabrizio Romano signed Luiz until 2026.
With a market value of 35 million euros, the Brazil international was previously among the most valuable professionals who will be officially allowed to negotiate with interested clubs from January 1st. In 2019, Luiz moved from Manchester City to the then promoted team for €16.8 million, where he has been one of the top performers ever since. In the meantime, the right-footed player even increased his market value to 38 million euros.

Aston Villa had resisted Arsenal’s advances in the summer, rejecting three offers from London for Luiz. The third offer with a remaining contract period of ten months is said to have been around EUR 25 million. For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the failed attempt on Deadline Day was a disappointment. “We tried it. At the end of the day we have to get those players who we think are the right ones. But we didn’t make it.”
