London (AP) – Coach Mikel Arteta has extended his contract with English football club Arsenal. The 40-year-old Spaniard signed a contract until June 30, 2025, as the Londoner announced.
“I’m excited, grateful and very, very happy today,” said Arteta, according to the club’s statement. Arteta took over the Gunners at the end of 2019 as the successor to Unai Emery. He had previously been assistant to star coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City since the 2016/2017 season.
“We want to take the club to the next level and really measure ourselves against the top teams. To do that we need to play in the Champions League. We need to be able to develop the team, improve our players, improve all departments, connect even more with our fans,” said Arteta, who played at Arsenal from 2011 to 2016. In 2020 Arsenal won the English Cup and Supercup with Arteta. With two games to go before the end of the current season, Arsenal are fourth in the table and thus a direct place for the premier class.
