Arnold Schwarzenegger has criticized Europe’s dependence on Russian gas supplies. “You have made yourselves very, very vulnerable to relying on Russia for energy,” the actor and former California governor said in a speech in Munich. Schwarzenegger was in town to open the Bits & Pretzels startup conference.

Instead, Schwarzenegger advocated nuclear power. “I think that way back in the 1970s and 1980s we made the big mistake of phasing out nuclear power,” he said. Environmentalists would have meant well with the nuclear phase-out, but made a mistake. Accidents can happen with nuclear energy. But the number of deaths from nuclear accidents is negligible compared to those from pollution and climate change.

At the same time, Schwarzenegger called for a farewell to fossil energy: “Fossil fuels are the enemy”. As governor of California, he wanted to set a prime example for the United States and the rest of the world when it came to climate protection. But even the “Terminator” seems a bit disillusioned about America today. When asked what Europe could learn from the US, his answer was: not as much as in the past.

The action star also spoke about his career, which took him from Styria to Hollywood. You can achieve anything, all you need is a “clear vision”, he said, and advised: “Get away from your iPhones”. He grew up in a small village in Austria without the internet, social networks and mobile phones. So he had a lot of time to think and to shape this “vision”. In addition, one should always remain active: “Be useful! There is no such thing as ‘I’m tired’ or ‘I don’t have time’.”
