Since Nilsson’s contract with Ostwestfalen expires at the end of the season, he is available on a free transfer. The left-footed player will join the new team in July and play the first half at St. Louis City SC 2, the transition team in the MLS Next Pro. According to reports, he is signing a working paper that is well below that of a “designated player” and is therefore not exempt from the salary cap.

In an interview with Transfermarkt as part of the change from BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki (31), sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel recently made it clear that he would like to have the axis of the team together by the summer. At St. Louis, Nilsson, who was brought in from Elfsborg by Arminia in 2019 for 400,000 euros, is the ideal solution in the defensive center. Among other things, he brings with him the experience of ten appearances for Sweden and 78 games in the Bundesliga and 2nd division for Bielefeld (one goal/two assists).

At St. Louis City, Nilsson, who is said to have had other offers, would be the fourth professional with a Bundesliga background. The future MLS club had previously announced Bürki’s and Cologne’s Tomas Ostrak (22) free transfers for the summer. In addition, there is center forward João Klauss (25), for whom TSG Hoffenheim collects a fee of 3.20 million euros (for all transfers in 2022/23).
