Armed intruder arrested at Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth spends Christmas | Royalty

This morning, police arrested an armed man on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The man has tried to break into the castle where Queen Elizabeth (95) celebrates Christmas with Prince Charles (74) and Camilla (75). This is reported by various British media.

Police were called to Windsor Castle about 8:30 a.m. local time this morning. A 19-year-old man was arrested on the castle grounds. In a statement, Chief Inspector Rebecca Mears said the investigation into the circumstances of the incident and the man’s motive is ongoing. “The man has been arrested on suspicion of violating or entering a protected area and possession of an assault weapon. He remains in custody at the moment.”

The police emphasize that the security protocol came into effect immediately when the man entered the site, and that he did not enter any buildings. “Members of the royal family have been informed of the incident,” it said.

Sandringham

Traditionally, the British Queen spends Christmas with her family at her estate in Sandringham. This year, however, like last year, she chose to stay at Windsor Castle. For fear of the corona virus, the 95-year-old princess celebrates Christmas in a limited circle. Only her son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla would be in attendance, as would Prince Edward and his family.

Earlier in the day, some royal family members had been seen in public as they went to attend a service at St George’s Chapel. Elizabeth, who has been taking it easy in recent months anyway, was not there, British media report.
