Arjen Lubach finds it reprehensible that the men of Today Inside advertise gambling via TOTO all the time. “So these are some filthy rich football boomers.”
The cabinet wants to further restrict gambling advertisements and exclude role models such as (former) football players from these expressions. Arjen Lubach thinks this is a good thing, because gambling leads to addiction for many people, resulting in endless poverty. Yet many celebrities participate in gambling advertisements in order to fill their pockets.
football boomers
Arjen points out that gambling advertising is not only in the commercial breaks. “By the way, you can also find them outside the commercial break. They’re just gambling on live television,” he says.
A fragment then appears in which the men from Today Inside recommend gambling via TOTO. They do that in every broadcast. Arjen: “So these are a couple of filthy rich football boomers who are paid by a state-owned company to promote gambling. Why don’t we just stop with those shitty commercials altogether?”
floppy head
To make fun of VI star Johan Derksen, Arjen then showed a photo of what Johan looked like 200 kilos ago, namely with a decent floppy head and a cigar in his mouth.
Arjen: “In the past Johan Derksen used to smoke during the broadcast and soon we will say: ‘Remember, Johan Derksen used to gamble during the broadcast. You really can’t imagine that anymore!’”
Johan responds
Today Inside was still on the channel when Arjen was joking at the competitor. Wilfred Genee: “Johan, you were just ridiculed by Arjen Lubach about the Toto. That is seriously true.”
Johan: “Do you have the number for that couple (Knoops, ed.)?”
Wilfred: “They even shot you with King Toto’s crown on. That you made a fool of yourself. First they showed a picture of you when you were 200 kilos with a cigar, that you were a very good role model then and that you are a very good role model now with your King Toto. I would make a case of it!”
Johan: “Yes, but listen, the respect is completely gone from this country. The icon of Dutch television is being ridiculed by some scourge.”
hypocritical
It is of course a bit hypocritical of Johan. This week he lashed out at the Meilandjes because they make entertainment out of poverty, but apparently he doesn’t mind pushing people into poverty with his gambling advertisements. Just like colleague Hélène Hendriks, by the way.
Johan critically: “Poverty in the Netherlands is broadcast as entertainment packaged by commercial TV. (…) I find it all a bit tacky when someone else’s misery and someone else’s shortcomings are magnified and turned into entertainment. I am against that.”
