‘Area near Exloo not suitable for an ammunition depot’

Following the example of the municipality of Coevorden, the neighboring municipality of Borger-Odoorn is also taking the lead, due to Defense plans to possibly realize new ammunition depots. Defense has a location in mind roughly between Borger and Exloo. “As far as we are concerned, that area is not suitable for this.”

This is what Borger-Odoorn spokesperson Tom ten Brink reports. An opinion has now been sent to Defense. “Our conclusion is that the designated area in our municipality is not suitable, due to different interests. We are talking about the presence of landscape and natural values, tourism and recreation, Astron, LOFAR and the UNESCO area De Hondsrug.”

The municipality of Borger-Odoorn responds, just as the municipality of Coevorden did earlier, to the document ‘Space for Defense Program’, which indicates possible locations for new ammunition depots on a map with dotted lines. In Drenthe there are two locations: a location roughly between Borger and Exloo and a location roughly between Schoonoord and Zweeloo. The municipality of Coevorden reacted with surprise at the beginning of last week and wanted to know what possible impact such an ammunition depot would have on safety and tourism in the area.
