Schiphol’s Airport Operation Center (APOC) is responsible for the logistics processes at the airport. They have given a new update to RTL News† In it they look ahead to the expected crowds in the summer holidays.
Crowds in June
Long queues at security are expected again next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, due to a staff shortage. A lot of people are expected, especially Friday morning. Also for the rest of the month of June there will be large crowds in the weekends.
Crowds in July
Are you flying in July or August? “A black scenario seems to be unfolding for July,” RTL Nieuws writes. “The staff shortage can cause long lines and flight disruptions on a daily basis.”
Crowds in August
When you fly in August, you sit just that little bit better. It will probably be a little less crowded than in July. The APOC does say that these are expectations, and that the situation could change.
Schiphol measures
For example, they do not yet take into account Schiphol’s package of measures in these expectations. For example, the airport wants to reduce the number of slots (the time at which an aircraft can land or take off) from 126,000 to 90,000 between 1 June and 28 August.
Delayed or cancelled
When a large amount of slots are cancelled, many passengers are the victims. According to RTL Nieuws, “you end up with millions of travelers who, for example, cannot depart from Schiphol or have to deal with canceled or rescheduled flights.”
What can Schiphol do?
It is therefore hoped that Schiphol will take action in time. For example, they could transfer passengers to other airports. Many passengers would rather fly to their holiday destination via Rotterdam, for example, than not at all. Schiphol can also improve the flow of passengers at the airport. In addition, attracting extra security officers would of course help a lot, but there is little chance that the airport will be able to do this this summer.
