AND Are they true that forest fires in Italy are increasing? False, why … although the fire forest areas have strong variations from year to year, there are no evidence that at national level, forest fires are increasing significantly?
From 2020, serious forest fires have been recorded in Italy in an era characterized by hot climate and drought episodes. Are climate change, therefore making forest fires increase?
Istat/Cufa studies on the areas affected by forest fires between 1970 and 2024 indicate that compared to 40 years ago the areas involved in bonfires are on the contrary decreased. Only in a few regions (Calabria, Lazio, Puglia) is observed, in recent years, a weak growing trend.
The decrease is such that the average of the surfaces burned every year before 2000 was 1088 km^2 while after 2020 it is about 655 km^2.
