Bad luck for Marcel van Roosmalen and Gijs Groenteman: their lucrative talk show that they make for BnnVara is cut back. Will they soon be welcome again as seasonal workers on SBS 6?
Marcel van Roosmalen and Gijs Groenteman were allowed to appear on SBS 6 for one season in 2023. They were used as summer replacements for Today Inside and scored reasonably well. Ultimately, the parties parted ways and Marcel and Gijs decided to make talk shows exclusively for BnnVara again, and they have been doing that quite successfully for years.
Why delete?
However, it has now been decided to remove Van Roosmalen & Groenteman from the NPO 3 schedule. Striking, says Victor Vlam. “It is the most watched program of NPO 3. Why would you delete that? It must be noted that the viewing figures have really fallen significantly,” he says in the podcast Victor Indicates TV.
How much have they fallen? “A year ago they still had around 450 thousand viewers and nowadays they often have around 350 thousand viewers. This means that they are really experiencing a downward trend. This is partly due to the fact that they have too many broadcasts per year.”
‘It’s overkill!’
It is overkillsays Victor. “I have been watching it for years and have often enjoyed it. It was quite funny at times, but they simply have too many broadcasts and that makes it too monotonous and more of the same. They went from twelve to thirty broadcasts per year in 2032 and that has simply killed them. It is really too much of the same.”
It is therefore logical that it will be on the list of programs that will be deleted, Victor continues. “In addition, NPO 3 will profile itself as a sports channel and then this program will no longer fit in very well anyway.”
Back to SBS?
Can Marcel and Gijs now turn to Talpa boss John de Mol again? “The question is: could they return to SBS, because they were of course shown there for part of a summer under the name Marcel & Gijs. I really don’t see that happening at all. The program was actually not a great success there, was it?”
The TV critic continues: “Because in the summer of 2023, two programs were tried to replace VI. Everyone thought that Marcel & Gijs would be the program that would replace VI, but it ended up being the other program: De Oranjezomer with Hélène Hendriks. That simply scored much, much better.”
‘Not happening!’
According to Victor, the gentlemen can forget about a new Talpa deal. “I don’t see them returning there. Marcel and Gijs are just a different blood type. The format they have is a bit similar to that of Today Inside, but the audience is really different.”
“Marcel and Gijs are a duo that work at de Volkskrant and NRC, while SBS has more of the Telegraaf audience. That really is a different DNA. I wouldn’t think it would be logical to go back to that.”
