After the Olympic Games, Christian Wück will take over as national football coach for the German women’s national team. Assessments of the decision by ARD expert Almuth Schult.
Christian Wück has worked very successfully in the men’s youth sector at the German Football Association (DFB) in recent years. Most recently, the 50-year-old surprisingly won the World Cup title with the U17s. The former Bundesliga professional had previously become European champions with the team.

“Christian Wück proved last year that he can lead a team. He can shape and direct them,” said Schult, praising the successor to interim coach Horst Hrubesch. This will be the DFB women in Paris at the Olympic Games and then concentrate again on his work as a youth manager at the second division team HSV.
An outside perspective can be an advantage
Wück has no experience in the women’s sector so far. But Schult doesn’t see any disadvantage in this: “Maybe that’s a good thing because he has an outside perspective and a precise vision of where he wants to develop and can thus get the best out of the team.”
Wück’s assistant coach is former national player Maren Meinert. It was also a good decision for Schult: “She is a luminary in the women’s field, both as a player and as a coach. That’s an interesting constellation.”
The Olympics should bring a positive boost
The uncertainty about the post-Olympic future has been resolved. Before Wück and his staff take over, it is still up to Hrubesch and the players to ensure euphoria and a good result at the Olympics in Paris. “Now the focus is on playing a really good tournament at the Olympic Games and thus bringing German football back to the fore,” emphasized Schult.
