ARD documentary examines the influences of subcultures on fashion

‘Beyond Fashion’ is back with a second season.

The four new episodes of the German Broadcasting Association’s fashion documentary series attempt a balancing act between social aspects and their influence on fashion. The make-up artist Avi Jakobs will lead through the various topic pools based on conversations with industry experts, designers and celebrities from Germany in order to answer the show’s key question, ARD announced on Tuesday.

Extraordinary and creative ideas go hand in hand with social challenges, which creates numerous subcultures in which like-minded people find and support each other. The episodes of ‘Beyond Fashion’ provide insights into the fashion world, which often finds its inspiration in the subgroups of individualists.

German model Stefanie Giesinger talks about mental health in the fashion industry and actress Ruby O. Fee admits her passion for fetish fashion. Singer Jennifer Weist gets to the bottom of prejudices against revealing outfits and feminist statements and rapper Olexesh emphasizes the strong influence of the hip-hop scene on fashion.

Gender fluidity, vintage fashion, cultural inequalities and the question of subjective beauty are discussed in the first season of the series. Its continuation is with the new episodes ‘Hype Fashion – how much power does rap have in fashion?’, ‘Fetish and clubwear – subculture or already mainstream?’, ‘Hyperfeminine to covered – how free does fashion make you?’ and ‘Fashion therapy or self-destruction – how does fashion influence mental health?’ can be found in the ARD media library.
