Archaeologists uncover historic finds in Wervik

The center of Wervik was once a Roman settlement. Medieval halls for grain, meat or cloth must once have stood on Steenakker. The archaeologists find a lot of material in the ground.

The researchers have already found pole pits, pitfalls, a piece of road from the Roman era, medieval pottery, metal objects, bone material and leather pieces. After the excavations, the archaeological research continues, including the analysis of soil samples in specialized labs.

The archaeological investigation on site will continue until the beginning of June.
