Arantxa Rus has reached the second round of the tennis tournament in Madrid. The Dutch tennis star won a great victory over 21-year-old American Amanda Anisimova, the number 46 in the world. She won the match 7-5 6-2.
The 32-year-old Russian had qualified for the main tournament in the Spanish city through the qualifications. Both players struggled to keep their service games in the first set. Rus broke her opponent again at 5-5 and finished it 7-5. In the second set, Rus still came under pressure on her own services. However, she held on and took her chances on Anisimova’s serve. The number 107 in the world decided the match on her second game point with 6-2.
Rus will play in the second round against the ninth seeded Greek Maria Sakkari, who was drawn in the first round.
Emma Raducanu withdraws from Madrid and drops out of top 100
The 2021 US Open winner is struggling with a right hand injury. The 20-year-old Raducanu would face the Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in the first round. With a win, Iga Swiatek, the Polish number 1 in the world, waited in the second round.
Raducanu has dropped in the world rankings due to, among other things, a wrist injury. She can currently be found at number 85 and has to be careful not to fall out of the top 100. Her state of mind was revealed during a press conference on Tuesday. According to journalists present, she answered sixteen questions with a total of 58 words.
In the men’s category, Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Fransespoor have a ‘bye’ in the second round. Kiki Bertens won the prestigious tournament in 2019.
