Appointment of members of the advisory committee for the return of cultural objects from a colonial context | News item

Laura van Broekhoven, Remco Raben and Alicia Schrikker are members of the advisory committee for the return of cultural objects from a colonial context. The committee is chaired by Lilian Gonçalves – Ho Kang You and advises State Secretary Uslu (Culture and Media) on applications for the return of cultural objects that ended up in the National Art Collection during the colonial period. A place is also available on the committee for an additional member, who will be appointed on the basis of the required expertise, depending on the request to be handled.

The committee will now consider the restitution requests submitted by countries of origin. Naturally, the Committee works closely with countries of origin and museums in the field of provenance research, in order to arrive at sound advice. There is currently no timeframe for processing the requests.

Lilian Goncalves – Ho Kang You is a lawyer and was, among other things, a State Councilor. As chair of the Gonçalves committee, she previously advised on the policy framework for dealing with objects from a colonial context.

Laura Van Broekhoven is director of the Pitt Rivers Museum and professor Museum Studies and Ethics at the University of Oxford. Previously, she was head of the Conservators of the National Museum of World Cultures. Her research focuses, among other things, on restitution and decolonization in museums and her archaeological expertise lies in Central and South America.

Remko Raben is professor of colonial and postcolonial literature and cultural history at the University of Amsterdam and associate professor at Utrecht University. Raben’s research includes the history of Indonesia in the twentieth century and postcolonial culture in the Netherlands.

Alicia Scarier is an associate professor of colonial and world history at Leiden University and conducts research into various aspects of the colonial past, mainly in Asia. In recent years she has gained extensive experience in conducting provenance research.
