Appointment chief director at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute | News item

prof. dr. MK (Maarten) van Aalst will become chief director and also Chief Science Officer at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The Council of Ministers has approved the nomination on the proposal of Minister Bruins Slot of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The appointment will take effect on 1 February 2023.

Maarten van Aalst is currently director of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. He also holds the Princess Margriet Chair for increasing resilience to natural disasters and climate change at the Faculty of Geo-Information Sciences and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente. He is Coordinating Lead Author at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), member of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change and editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Climate Risk Management. Previously, he advised the World Bank, the OECD, and various UN organizations on how to deal with the risks of a changing climate.

Maarten van Aalst obtained an M.Sc. in Astrophysics and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciencee at Utrecht University.

This appointment was made on the basis of the procedure for the top management group of the General Administrative Service.
