Apple fined 20 million euros in Brazil for selling iPhones without a charger | Tech

A judge in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo has ordered Apple to pay a fine of about 20 million euros for selling its recent iPhone models without a charger. This has been announced by the Brazilian judiciary.

A civil court in São Paulo convicted Apple of unfair business practices for selling its iPhone 12 and 13 models without a charger. The case was brought by the Brazilian consumer association ABMCC.

The judge also ruled that the amount must be deposited in a consumer protection fund. Approximately 2 million euros will also go to the consumer association that initiated the case.

The ruling, which Apple has yet to appeal, follows a $2.5 million fine imposed by the Justice Department’s consumer protection agency in September for the same reason. At that time, a ban was also pronounced on selling the affected models without a charger.

Apple has stopped charging new phones since October 2020, starting with the launch of the iPhone 12, “because it’s better for the environment,” the company said.

The judge also ordered the tech giant to give chargers to all customers who have bought an iPhone 12 or 13 in the past two years and to supply chargers with all new phones from now on.
