Apple has confirmed for the Wall Street Journal, that it will switch to USB-C charging. When the magazine asked Apple’s marketing director in a video interview From Greg Joswiakwhether the company plans to replace Lightning connectors, Joswiak answered this way:

– Naturally, we have to comply with the requirements, and we have no choice.

This is true, as a new EU law obliges manufacturers to include a USB-C charging port in small and medium-sized electrical devices by the end of 2024. This includes, for example, telephones.

Joswiak did not comment further on whether the USB-C connector will already be seen in next year’s iPhone.

– Europeans are the ones who dictate the schedule for European customers, Joswiak said.

Joswiak did not want to comment on whether USB-C connectors will also be introduced outside of Europe. However, he made it clear that Apple is not happy with the new law.

Joswiak said that Apple has gone its own way and relied on its own development work instead of forcing lawmakers to adopt hardware standards. In addition, Joswiak brought up that adapters with detachable cables have largely solved the standardization problem. According to him, replacing iPhone Lightning cables with USB-C cables causes a lot of electronic waste.

There has been talk that Apple might get around using the USB-C port by switching to wireless charging only. However, there is no information about this yet.
