Apple has been working with Amazon for years. Now the collaboration is to be expanded and used to expand generative AI.
• Amazon and Apple work together
• AWS chips in Apple devices
• Apple focuses on AI
Apple is likely to increasingly rely on the AI technology from Amazon Web Services (AWS), especially on their proprietary chips. At this year’s AWS Reinvent conference, Apple gave insights into its collaboration with Amazon and in this context emphasized the advantages of AWS’ cloud solutions. This is probably not just about efficiency gains in existing services such as Siri or Apple Music, but also about new perspectives for the development of generative AI. “We have a strong business relationship and the infrastructure is reliable and can serve our customers worldwide,” CNBC quoted Benoit Dupin, senior director of machine learning and AI at Apple.
AWS chips increase efficiency and enable innovation
Apple has been using AWS chips – including Inferentia and Graviton – for more than a decade to make AI services such as search functions and other cloud-based applications more efficient. Dupin expects a significant increase in efficiency: “In the early phases of the evaluation of Trainium2, we expect an increase in efficiency of up to 50% through pre-training,” as CNBC quoted him in this context.
Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, told CNBC that Apple is leading the way as a beta tester for this technology and has specifically asked AWS for support in developing its generative AI solutions.
Generative AI: Apple’s vision with “Apple Intelligence”
This year, Apple launched its first generative AI solution, Apple Intelligence. The platform’s features include email rewriting, notification aggregation, and new emoji creation. In the future it will probably be integrated with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Siri will also probably include new functions.
In contrast to many competitors that rely on NVIDIA-based cloud clusters, Apple is pursuing a hybrid strategy: as much as possible is processed on the in-house chips of the iPhone, iPad or Mac devices, while more complex requests are processed on servers with M -Series chips are being processed, as CNBC reports.
Apple’s use of AWS chips and its hybrid strategy could well inspire other companies to explore alternatives to NVIDIA GPUs. How the partnership between Amazon and Apple will develop in the future remains to be seen.
