Apartment resident in Deventer sees an unpleasant surprise on the balcony | Deventer

You will see it lying on your balcony. A large snake of more than a meter. It happened to an apartment resident in Deventer. Two employees of Dierenambulance Overgelder quickly offered help.

A resident of a flat in Deventer got the shock of her life when she suddenly saw a snake on a balcony above her. She called in the Deventer police. Officers immediately came to take a look and found the reptile curled up against the balcony wall. The officers then called Animal Ambulance Overgelder in Klarenbeek.

“We didn’t know what kind of snake it was at the time,” says the animal ambulance worker who was on duty that day and did not want to be named. ,,Exciting, because for my colleague and me it was the first time that we went up to a snake.”

King Python

The officers were asked to send pictures of the animal to the paramedics. ,,We grabbed the handbook to read the procedures what we had to do. If it is a poisonous snake, we do nothing and call in experts. If the snake is not poisonous, we have to take the animal with us,” says the snake catcher.

Judging by the pictures, it looked like a King Python. Not a poisonous specimen thankfully. A relief, says the animal ambulance worker. ,,And it also turned out to be a much smaller snake than the size the officers had given us. Not 1.5 meters, but certainly a meter. My colleague and I were able to safely put the snake in the snake bag with a special hook. The apartment resident finally dared to go out on her own balcony again.”

hunger

According to reptile expert Jan van het Meer of the Friends of Meerzo Foundation in Marknesse, it is possible that the animal escaped from a house near the site at an unguarded moment. “This species does not travel long distances. But when it is hungry, it naturally goes in search of food. Other than that, a King Python does little. It is often curled up at rest. Until food comes along. Then they also become more fanatic.”

The snake was taken by the animal ambulance to the animal shelter, where it awaits its owner or is transferred to a special reptile shelter.
