The ANWB is concerned about people affected by the rapidly rising fuel prices and wants the cabinet to take measures. ANWB board chairman Marga de Jager asks Minister Sigrid Kaag (Finance) to freeze the VAT above a petrol price of 1.711 and to lower the excise duty. According to De Jager, the Netherlands is “a frontrunner with a rate of 83 cents” in the field of excise duty in Europe, while the mandatory minimum in the European Union has been agreed at 35.9 cents.
In a sample of nearly 1,400 members held this week, ANWB members indicated that they would use the car less often if fuel prices continued to rise. Nearly a third indicate that they are experiencing financial difficulties due to the high petrol price. The interest group is particularly concerned about the people who say they have to go to work by car because they have no alternative (34 percent). “Our members see several solutions: the government opts for a reduction in excise duty, employers increase their mileage allowance and they can drive more economically and use the car less often,” the ANWB said in a letter to the minister.
