The shock was real when the Cold War broke out 75 years ago. In the port of Antwerp, 99 nuclear bomb shelters were built at lightning speed. Cellars for citizens were built under the Groenplaats and the Grote Markt. And to protect the art treasures of the Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp in the event of a nuclear attack, a gigantic nuclear bunker was set up. But what remains of the refuges today? With the specter of the Cold War once again haunting Europe, we set out to investigate.
