Antje Buursma-Backx (95), known from the War Diary of Drenthe, passed away

“Some children threw me into the canal, and then I walked home with wet clothes again. And once I was completely smeared with shoe polish, I was completely black. It took three days before everything was clean again.”

Antje’s story is one of five stories that young people can ‘experience’. Through an app, students can become one of five characters. They act out situations and have to show facial expressions, but also write down what their main character is thinking. A comic is made from this and thus the War Diary of Drenthe is created. The curriculum also uses original diaries, interviews, letters, police reports, newspaper articles and photographs.

‘We thought it was very special that Antje wanted to share her moving story with us. We wish her relatives a lot of strength with this loss.”
