TOThey will arrive in early October the new anti-Covid vaccines for the autumn vaccination campaign: the Regions wait for the deliveries and then pass them on to family doctors and pharmacies, who will take care of the majority of the administrations.
Anti-Covid vaccines, in October together with the flu shot
«Within 15 days – explained the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci – the first doses of the new vaccine will be available. It will not be mandatory, but only recommended. The vaccine will be free for everyone citizens who want to do so, even for those who are not included in the foreseen categories”.
The autumn campaign, which will be concomitant with that against seasonal flu, can count like this on the newest vaccines on which theEuropean Medicines Agency EMA gave the green light at the end of August. These are those adapted to the new variants that have spread with unexpected speed in our country and in the rest of the world, and therefore more effective at repelling them.
Why get vaccinated
As the experts from the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health control body, also explain, «vaccination remains the best protection against Covid-19-related hospitalization and death. AND it also reduces the possibility of suffering the effects of long-Covid.” Furthermore, «receiving an updated vaccine can restore protection. And therefore provide improved protection against the variants currently responsible for the majority of infections.”
What are the new anti-Covid vaccines
The recommended administration is one dose of Newly formulated Sars-CoV-2 vaccine, containing XBB.1.5, to the entire population over the age of 60. But also to subjects suffering from chronic pathologies and immunocompromised situations which entail an increased risk of serious illness. It’s still to pregnant women and healthcare workers not immunized in the past 12 months.
Free vaccination for all
The circular also recommends the vaccine “to family members and cohabitants of people with serious fragility”. But at the ministry and in the Regions it is believed that even those who do not belong to this category will be able to ask their doctor for the vaccine. In fact, those who want to get vaccinated, even if they do not fall into the categories considered at risk, will be able to do so. And the administration is always free anyway.
Family doctors are the point of reference
In most cases, family doctors will inject the vaccine: the indication is to inject the anti-Covid and the anti-flu in the same session which usually starts injecting at the end of October. In some local health authorities they will also be administered in health districts but the vaccination hubs of the times of the pandemic will no longer be seen.
