Another loss for the volatile Orange with Volendam debutant Joey Veerman

The Dutch national team finished fourth and last in the final tournament of the Nations League. In Enschede, the team of national coach Ronald Koeman went down 3-2 against Italy in the consolation final. Joey Veerman did make his debut, the Volenda player entered the field fifteen minutes before the end.

Just like earlier this week, Ronald Koeman did not field any Ajax players in the Orange squad. Former Ajax player Noa Lang was allowed to start, at the expense of Castricummer Teun Koopmeiners. All of that did not lead to a good first half, because Italy already had a 2-0 lead in Enschede after twenty minutes. Under a loud whistle concert, the Dutch national team then went to the dressing room.

In the second half, the national coach from Zaandam intervened hard. Lutsharel Geertruida, Donyell Malen and Noa Lang stayed behind in the dressing room and Wout Weghorst, Georgino Wijnaldum and Steven Bergwijn were allowed to try and do something about the deficit. And that worked out pretty well. Orange played much better.

The Orange came back into the game via Steven Bergwijn. Ajax’s left winger shot the ball convincingly into the left corner after a nice action. Nevertheless, Italy increased the lead to two again shortly afterwards. Wijnaldum made another connection goal just before time, but it didn’t get any further than a final offensive.

Debutant Veerman

After the earlier defeat against Croatia (4-2) and now against Italy, Koeman’s internationals are going into the summer break with an unpleasant feeling. That feeling will be different with Joey Veerman. PSV’s Volendam midfielder came on for Mats Wieffer fifteen minutes before the end and provided the assist for Wijnaldum’s goal.

The next international matches are in September. Then the European Championship qualifiers against Greece and Ireland are on the program. Until then, plenty of homework for Koeman and his technical staff.

Lineup Netherlands: Bijlow; Dumfries, Geertruida (Wijnaldum/46), Van Dijk, Ake; De Jong, Wieffer (Veerman/76), Simons (Koopmeiners/63); Grinding (Bergwijn/46), Gakpo, Long (Weghorst/46)
