Soccer goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has again suffered from the thyroid gland. “Unfortunately, after four years without cancer, a recurrence was discovered in my thyroid‘ the 31-year-old wrote on her club’s website Chelsea FC in London and on Instagram.
She works closely with the club doctor and a specialist in London. “I’m confident my treatment will be just as effective as last time and I look forward to getting back on the pitch and seeing you all at Kingsmeadow and Stamford Bridge.”said Berger.
She wants to lead her fight publicly to be an inspiration to others affected. Chelsea FC promised her full support. “We’re all behind you, Ann”, Chelsea FC tweeted on Tuesday. Behind her club put a blue heart.
First cancer in November 2017
Many of her fellow players from the EM squad, such as Alexandra Popp and Lina Magull or colleagues from her club FC Chelsea, also commented with hearts and encouraging words.
You know the story behind the post: In November 2017, the then 27-year-old was diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer. At that time Ann-Katrin Berger played for Birmingham City. After an operation the following month, she was back on the pitch in early 2018.
Berger without use in the squad of the EM
Berger was in the German squad at the European Championships in England in July, but was not used. She was not listed in the squad for the second place in the European Championship for the two remaining qualifying games for the World Cup in early September. The German Football Association (DFB) gave private reasons for her absence on Tuesday afternoon.
