Another collision on Aalsmeer roundabout, elderly person injured

For the umpteenth time, a cyclist was injured in a collision on a roundabout on the Burgemeester Kasteleinweg (N196) in Aalsmeer. This time, an 82-year-old man was injured when he collided with a car.

A police spokesman said the man was taken to hospital by ambulance. Nothing is known about his injuries, but the spokesperson says that the police are ‘doing no further investigation into the collision’. The road has now been reopened.

Most accidents happen near the Dorpsstraat in Aalsmeer, but this time the accident took place at the roundabout that connects the Burgemeester Kasteleinweg with the Oosteinderweg.

Due to the large number of accidents, the municipality took measures on 1 July to make the N196 safer. “We see that the number of accidents is decreasing, but of course we have to ensure that no more accidents happen. Every accident is one too many,” Laura Tas, spokesperson for the municipality of Aalsmeer, told NH at the beginning of this month.

Less incentives on the road

These measures are mainly aimed at reducing ‘incentives’ for all road users, and consist of, among other things, removing pre-sorting areas on roundabouts, clarifying bus lanes and adjusting signage. The buses must also stop in front of the roundabout of the Dorpsstraat. At the other roundabouts, the bus is already slowing down, because there are bus stops there.

The precautions taken by the municipality are not only aimed at car traffic. A major concern is the high speed at which cyclists, often on an e-bike, go through the roundabouts. Ultimately, the municipality wants to implement ‘heavier measures’, such as adjusting the road lanes.
