Van Vleuten (39) won the Tour of Italy for women earlier in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, she had to leave the race as leader two days before the end after breaking her left wrist in a fall. Last year the race did not fit in with her preparation for the Olympic Games. In Tokyo she took silver in the road race and gold in the individual time trial. Shortly before the Giro, Van Vleuten announced that she will continue for another year. Her next goal is the Tour de France which starts in Paris in two weeks.
It was also a successful Giro Donne for the Netherlands outside of Van Vleuten’s final win. Van Vleuten and Marianne Vos both won two stages.
