Despite a broken elbow, Dutch cycling star Annemiek van Vleuten will start the World Championship race in Wollongong, Australia, on Saturday. This was announced by her team Movistar.
Despite the injury, the 39-year-old is one of the favorites for the 164.3-kilometer race on Saturday. Van Vleuten was already world champion in 2019, won the famous rainbow jersey in the individual time trial in 2017 and 2018.
At the Tokyo Olympics, she won silver in the road race and gold in the time trial.
Van Vleuten apparently fell due to a technical defect shortly after the start of Wednesday’s team mixed time trial. After the race, the Tour de France winner told Femmes the fracture was stable and would not require surgery.
She will make a start in the road race dependent on the pain. Van Vleuten obviously has this under control.
