Anish Giri will not be credited with this edition of Tata Steel Chess. The winner of the 2023 tournament surprisingly lost to Dommaraju Gukesh in the semi-finals of the tiebreaks. Wei Yi (China) won the prestigious chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee.
At the end of the thirteenth round, four chess players, including 29-year-old Giri, had achieved 8.5 points. They shared first place. A so-called tiebreak (blitz chess games) had to ensure the decision. In those decisive chess games, Giri started with a victory over Gukesh, but the Indian won the next two games.
Wei Yi defeated the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdoessatorov in the semi-finals and trumped Gukesh in the final.
