Angry farmers occupied Eelde airport on Wednesday morning. Mayor Marcel Thijsen is counting on a thousand demonstrators

Protesting farmers plan to occupy Groningen Airport Eelde on Wednesday morning at 9.00. Mayor Marcel Thijsen of the municipality of Tynaarlo takes into account around 1000 demonstrators.

It has been agreed with the farmers that the runways will remain free. No commercial flights will depart or land at Eelde on Wednesday, but the airport must remain available for organ flights. One of these is expected on Wednesday, with the UMCG as final destination.

Consultation with the triangle

During the council meeting on Tuesday evening, Thijsen had to leave the room a number of times. Vice-chairman Anneke Lubbers (PvdA) took over the gavel when Thijsen had to consult with the police and the Public Prosecution Service halfway through the meeting. The mayor has indicated that he will be present at the protest.
