Angry crowd of Romanians demands 1.3 million euros in wages at Middenmeer data center

About eighty angry Romanians gathered in front of the data center in Middenmeer this afternoon. They worked for the contracting companies that built the data center, but now say they have been waiting for their salaries for two months.

The group of people, mainly from Romania, tell our reporter on site that they are still waiting for two months’ wages for about 120 people, equivalent to about 1.3 million euros.

After the construction of the center was completed, the construction workers returned to their home country Romania, expecting their salaries to follow soon. But that never happened. That’s why they got on the bus yesterday and traveled 2,000 kilometers to get the money.

Microsoft Commitment

A spokesperson for the angry group says they have received a commitment from Microsoft that they will receive the money tomorrow. They themselves have little confidence in this. But the group emphasizes: if Microsoft does not agree, the group will be back tomorrow.

Shortly afterwards, the NH reporter was sent away from the site by security. Microsoft could no longer be reached by telephone on Monday afternoon. Director Jack Kranenburg of the Agriport business park, where the data center is located, was not yet aware of the situation.
