Angela de Jong agrees with Reinout Oerlemans’ comment that it has been a long time since John de Mol delivered a world hit. She thinks he’s passé.
Reinout Oerlemans, John de Mol’s former rival, made no bones about it last Friday in his first major TV interview in eight years: he pukes on the media billionaire. He also subtly pointed out that John is no longer as successful as some people may think.
No hit in twelve years
According to Reinout, the time when John was one of the largest TV makers in the world is far behind us. “The Netherlands was an incredibly beautiful place for a while [tv-]export country, but of course that has not been the case for a hundred years now. The Voice is a beautiful format and that is already twelve years old,” he says, pointing to John’s latest world hit.
He continues: “Israel has taken over with large formats or now with The Masked Singer… That’s from Asia. Every country has such a peak period and then it goes on for a bit.”
Faded glory
Angela de Jong is crocheting in her today AD column takes in Reinout’s sneer and portrays John as faded glory. “Twelve years after his last real success, he is mainly busy pulling marbles from an autistic man”, bit the opinion diva, pointing to the reason why Reinout no longer wants to work with John.
He is also a coward, Angela thinks. “He is too shy to sit in front of Tim Hofman’s camera again, but does move second Paul Römer forward to tell Jinek what an unsung visionary his boss is. So visionary that he once predicted to a certain competitor that he would fail.”
Busy with biting Gillis
John once warned Reinout that he would decimate him. That didn’t happen: Reinout now leads a life on the other side of the ocean that John can only dream of.
In 2020, the media billionaire is mainly concerned with defending all kinds of questionable types, Angela sneezes. “He is busy with the question where exactly camping boss Peter Gillis bit his Nicol.”
