Andy Benjamins builds a disappeared city center: Virtual Hoogeveen

Fortunately, some buildings are still there. And that is useful for Andy during the digital reconstruction. Such as the Zwaluw mill and the miller’s house. But something used to be possible here that is no longer possible: sailing your ship into the mill to deliver your grain.

Because everything really has to be right, Andy gets help from the municipal archives, the story yard, historian Albert Metselaar and the Historical Circle Hoogeveen. Construction drawings, data, photos, building regulations, everything is researched as much as possible to reconstruct the reality of the past.

Because the well-known Hoogeveen photographer Anno Bakker also photographed many buildings from the inside during his lifetime, they can soon also be reconstructed ‘internally’. Because technology is innovating so quickly and AI is also making its debut, Benjamins expects that he will one day build complete 3D virtual environments so that you as a visitor can also walk straight around and look at such a disappeared building in the center of Hoogeveen.
