Genoa has put the former top attacker from Ukraine on the street after disappointing results. The club is nineteenth in Serie A without a win under the leadership of Shevchenko. There was a victory in the Coppa Italia, but the club has not been active in that since last Thursday.
Shevchenko himself scored nearly 130 goals in Serie A for Milan, winning the Champions League in 2003 and the league title a year later. The Ukrainian was awarded the Golden Ball in 2004 as the best footballer in Europe.
He has also been the national team coach for the past five years. Under his leadership, Ukraine reached the quarter-finals at last year’s European Championship. The national coach subsequently decided not to extend his contract.
Abdoulay Konko is temporarily taking over the honors with the first team. He must lead the team to a result against Fiorentina on Monday.
