In terms of sport, the start of the US Open went more or less according to plan for the Canadian Bianca Andreescu, but during her first round match in New York the outfit from the sports goods manufacturer Nike caused her big problems.
Just in time for the big tournaments, the big sporting goods manufacturers traditionally equip their well-known athletes with newly designed outfits. As a former US Open winner, Bianca Andreescu is one of the players who was provided with a new kit from Nike in New York. But it was precisely this dress that caused the Canadian great problems during her first-round match against French Harmony Tan.
Andreescu felt that her new Nike dress didn’t fit well with certain hits and might reveal too much.
She asked the referee for a chance to change her dress and complained. “It’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault. The dress is so… so bad,” Andreescu said angrily.
Andreescu apologizes to Nike
After the match, Andreescu also realized that her criticism would not be well received by Nike, who rowed back on the PK and apologized for her clear words.
“I apologize to everyone I didn’t respect. I love Nike and I hope to work with them for the rest of my life,” said the Canadian. She “definitely could have expressed herself differently”, the 2019 US Open winner regretted her choice of words.
The dress “only bothered her with a few previous hands. I just had the feeling that it came up a bit,” the 22-year-old justified herself.
At the end of the day, however, Andreescu was also able to laugh about the curious clothes mishap. She won the match against Tan 6:0, 3:6 and 6:1. In many ways not a perfect, but ultimately satisfactory start to the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
