Andreas Almgren set a new Swedish record at 5,000 meters last week in the Diamond League competition in Brussels.

Almgren, 27, who clocked a time of 13:01.70, improved Anders Gärderud the result made in 1976 by more than 16 seconds.

– He has always been a great talent, but he has had problems with illnesses and constant injuries. Now he has stayed healthy for a long time and it is only natural that the results come, the reigning champion of the world and Europe Jakob Ingetbrigtsen said to Aftonbladet.

Right after, the Norwegian talked about the excitement in Sweden about the new athletics superstar, when the man was asked if he sees Almgren as a threat.

– No, I don’t see, Ingetbrigtsen laughed.

The top of the world far away

Ingetbrigtsen won this season’s prestigious races with slower times than Almgren’s quote, but he holds the five-ton European record of 12:48.45, which he ran in the Diamond League last year.

In Brussels, you could clearly see what kind of stroke the top of the world is in the 5,000 meter distance. Among others, three Kenyans went ahead of Almgren, who reached eighth place, the fastest of which was the winner with a time of 12:45.71 Jacob Krop.

In last weekend’s national competition, Almgren represented Sweden in the 1,500 race. He won it with a time of 3:39.56 after barely covering Finland Joonas Rinne.
