Prince called André 3000 to explain what went wrong with OutKast’s performance.
André 3000 shared a lesson Prince taught him after the duo’s reunion performance in 2014: “In the morning I get a call from Prince. I don’t know him that well, I don’t know how he got my number. I have no idea. And the first thing he says is, ‘Do you know what your problem is? You don’t realize how big you guys are.'”

Then André 3000 further remembers this unusual call in the interview with “GQ”: “And then Prince said: ‘You have to remind people who you are.’ From that point on I was like, OK.”
The hip-hop duo, consisting of André 3000 and Big Boi, kicked off their 2014 reunion tour with a performance at the Coachella festival. The performance on the first weekend of the festival received rather lukewarm reviews. However, the duo returned on the second weekend with a revised setlist and performance.
André 3000 with new album
The interview in which the musician shared this anecdote took place ahead of the release of André’s first solo album in 17 years: NEW BLUE SUN, released on Friday, November 17th.
He previously revealed to fans that the album is not a rap album and even has a note on the cover suggesting that the LP contains “no bars.” André 3000 told GQ: “Sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap. I have worked with some of the newest, freshest, youngest and most old fashioned producers. I get beats all the time. I try to write all the time.”
