Receiving a gift is always a nice bright spot in these dark days. Because Sinterklaas is already so busy, he gets some help from the Sunflower. In December, the volunteers of this association go the extra mile for adults with a physical disability and their environment. Like in Moergestel where they cheer people up with a surprise.
In the car of Peter Vrijhoeven, volunteer from De Zonnebloem, the presents are piled high in the trunk. Tasty snacks, puzzles, books. Everything a lonely heart desires in December. A welcome surprise, according to Toos van Brakel-Habraken, who receives a package at her front door. “Fantastic, I didn’t expect it at all. Really very nice.”
Why is she getting the package? “Maybe because I’m sick? Otherwise I wouldn’t know. I think it’s great. A real boost,” Toos beams.
And that is precisely the intention of the Zonnebloem association in Moergestel. “People are always happy. Sometimes it is very emotional. It is just great to hand out those presents,” says Vrijhoeven.
Sun in the chimney
De Zonnebloem would like to encourage people who are in danger of becoming socially isolated due to a physical disability in December. This is done with the ‘Sun in the Chimney’ campaign, a Sinterklaas campaign by the association that has existed for 75 years. Many departments of Zonnebloem in Brabant are participating. From Oisterwijk to Oudenbosch. From Waalre to Vinkel.
People who could use a bright spot receive a Sinterklaas gift from anonymous donors. These are loving, personal gifts, delivered by volunteers from De Zonnebloem.
Because every gift is a surprise, no agreements are made in advance. That also has its downsides. At an address, the front door remains closed. Vrijhoeven: “Unfortunately, no one is home. That can happen. Then we will come back later to deliver the package.”
Annie Robben is one of the many surprised residents of Moergestel who is at home. “I don’t need to get anything, but it does feel good,” Annie says with a broad smile as she hugs a large gift in her arms.
